I seemed no different as my hands roamed my body, everything felt just the same. I looked up to where Ian and Avan stood on the other side of the desk, their bodies were angled towards mine, and found their eyes searching for any ill harm from the spell. A soft tug in my chest pulled my gaze towards Avan, his face a hard mask.

“I’m okay.” My voice sounded the same too, albeit a bit breathy from the events. “Did you guys see that? When my magic came out?” They had to have. I couldn’t have been the only one.

“No, Briar. It was complete darkness for us.” Cal’s gaze flicked to settle on Ian and Avan. “What did you see?” he asked, coming to my side.

“Well, I saw…you, or at least your magic, maybe? There were golden threads connecting us all, and Ian’s spell was around the one tying Avan and me together. It looked like a vine…” My words tapered off as I thought about the gold threads still between us. The spell should have dissolved them too, I would’ve thought, but maybe Ian was right. Fate…

“You are a rare one, indeed, Briar,” Ian said, his head tilting to the side as he observed me with a raised brow. “You saw our magic? What did it look like?”

“Well, yours is like the night sky—dark but calming at the same time. Cal’s is a burning flame, and Avan’s has some sort of earthy feeling, like springtime,” I said, pointing to each man as I explained. Ian’s gaze tracked my hand, and a gentle caress of his night magic washed over my arm to calm my nerves.

His touch was different, cooling where Cal’s was burning fire. Each man elicited a different reaction from my body, but as we trailed along together in this endlessly weaving story, I was beginning to inherently know each of their magics. The springy taste of Avan’s perfectly complemented the warmth of Cal, and somehow, Ian’s night sky wove them all together. They were meant to be on this path together, even if fate or some other outside force had deemed it, and somehow, I’d been drug along as well.

Those golden strands stood out in my mind’s eye. Why hadn’t those disappeared with the spell? Was the bond really broken, or did fate have something more sinister in mind? I wanted my magic to coat the room again so I could poke and prod at each strand until it snapped, leaving me to myself and myself alone.

Ian hummed, pulling me from my thoughts. His hands found their way into his pockets again as his eyes skittered over Avan’s hard form. “Well, I should take my leave now. Come find me when you want a bit more…fun,” he said, nodding to both Cal and Avan before stalking from the room.

Avan was silent as he watched over me as if I were a fragile porcelain doll. “You’re really okay?” he murmured.

“A bit shaken from the whole experience, but yeah, I’m okay.
